چکیده

As the effectiveness of beta-agonists for treating asthma attacks has been established, numerous other supportive treatments for asthma attacks have also been investigated, such as systemic glucocorticoids and magnesium. Among these additional therapies, inhaled furosemide is of particular interest; several studies have evaluated the effects of prophylactic inhaled furosemide in attenuating bronchoconstriction and asthma attacks. To determine the efficacy of inhaled furosemide during asthma attacks, we performed a systematic review using the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases from their inception through 14 March 2014. A meta-analysis was conducted by calculating the standardized mean difference from each study and integrating these means using a random effects model. In addition, subanalyses were performed in the studies that evaluated the peak expiratory flow rate and the forced expiratory volume in 1 second. We identified six studies using double-blinded, randomized control trial designs that evaluated inhaled furosemide in conjunction with standard treatments in patients experiencing asthma attacks [1-6] (Figure 1); a total of 78 patients received inhaled furosemide and 79 patients received a placebo (Tables 1 and 2). The mean age of patients ranged from 8.4 to 47 years [3,6]. In two studies, patients were administered 40 mg inhaled

Spirometry Findings Following Treatment with Oral and Inhalant Corticosteroids in Mild to Moderate Asthma Exacerbation in Children

Introduction:  Asthma exacerbation is common in children. Treatment with oral corticosteroids (OCS) and inhaled corticosteroids are suggested for asthma exacerbation. It is shown that inhaled corticosteroids has similar outcome in reducing asthma symptoms compared to OCS. But few studies have evaluated the pulmonary function changes in these two treatments. In this study, we evaluated the chang...

Effectiveness of nebulized furosemide added to nebulized salbutamol in children with acute asthma.

BACKGROUND Nebulized furosemide has been shown to be protective against bronchoconstricting stimuli. METHODS To investigate whether inhaled furosemide would exhibit an additional therapeutic effect in children with acute asthma we performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which patients with acute asthma attack were randomized to receive either nebulized salbutamol (0.15 mg/kg) pl...

Comparative effectiveness of inhaled corticosteroids for paediatric asthma: protocol for a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION Use of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) is the mainstream maintenance therapy for paediatric asthma. Several forms of ICS are available, but the relative effectiveness among ICS has not been well investigated in published, randomised, controlled trials. The paucity of direct comparisons between ICS may have resulted in insufficient estimation in former systematic reviews/meta-analyses....

Comparing Serum Procalcitonin Levels Between Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Patients with Acute Exacerbation of Asthma

Background and purpose: Serum procalcitonin (PCT) indicates a bacterial infection that can reduce the administration of antibiotics. The aim of this study was to compare serum procalcitonin levels in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma and its relationship with lung function and inflammatory factors. Materials and methods: In this cross-s...
